The First 100 Hours©

This completely original teaching strategy was written by Bakersfield Breastfeeds (now known as California Advanced Lactation Institute) as a training guide for healthcare professionals who assist mothers and babies both prenatally and in the earliest postpartum period.  It is fully referenced and complies with all requirements of the Baby-Friendly© Hospital Initiative (BFHI) and the American Academy of Pediatrics' Breastfeeding Policy.

The First 100 Hours© strategy is designed to help mothers set an achievable breastfeeding goal: nurse exclusively and feed only mother's own milk for the first 4 days of baby's life.  This takes them through the hospital experience and usually past the first visit to the pediatrician, all with the support and information they need to navigate common obstacles during that time period while avoiding the risks of formula. For the mother who chooses to use some formula during that time period, as well as those who are told to do so by their healthcare providers, appropriate support and education is provided to help the mother protect her milk supply during that critical period so that she can resume exclusive breastfeeding as soon as she desires.  By addressing the mother's and baby's individual needs during this time, appropriate clinical assessments can be made and referrals provided for their specific situation.

A customized training session of lengths ranging from 1 to 8 hours can be arranged to accommodate your group. We have presented this strategy to physicians in a hospital setting, lactation professionals, and at a quarterly continuing education forum for public health nurses.  Clinical skills practice can be included as needed.  Please contact us here if you are interested in scheduling a training for your group of 10 or more!
